INDONESIA : Located in Embong Malang in eastern Java, the Empire Palace is a multi-functional venue that is used for events as diverse as worship, wedding parties and corporate product launches.

The management team recently consulted Surabaya-based Melodia Sound & Lighting System on a new sound system to meet its many requirements.

A new Outline Audio MiniCOM.P.A.S.S system has ensured that live performance, playback and speech reinforcement have all been greatly improved. Twelve MiniCOM.P.A.S.S cabinets have been ceiling suspended in LR configurations and supplemented by a two per side Subtech 218SP subwoofer system, while delays are provided by Outline DVS12 speakers. Array configurations were determined using Outline Diva software, and this modeling helped to determine the eventual speaker positions chosen by Melodia systems engineer Budihardjo Sutanto and his team. In addition, Melodia Sound & Lighting System’s supplied Outline H.A.R.D 115SP stage monitors together with YAMAHA PM5D and IM8 consoles for FOH and monitors respectively.

‘We used and asymmetrical horizontal coverage pattern to change the reverberant nature of the venue’

Mr. Sutanto explained. ‘Diva works very well for us, and the services that are now conducted in the Malang Church have been a tremendous success, for which the hotel management team has congratulated us on the system that we supplied and installed. The MiniCOM.P.A.S.S system is a compact, lightweight and active speaker, which provides high-fidelity sound characteristics. Venues here in Indonesia really like it as it offers a plug-and-play solution with an ease of set-up’

Melodia Sound & Lighting System is a division of Melodia Musik, serving the entertainment, event production, and commercial installation markets throughout Indonesia.

VIETNAM: Sponsored by Mobifone, Rock Storm 2010 entertained rock fans across Vietnam with a host of national artists, including Pentatonic, Final Stage, Nuranium, Rosewood, Microwave and Thai Thuy Linh. As it did in 2009,
the 10-city tour kicked off in the chilly December air of Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium, before going on to Hai Phong, Thai Nguyen, Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Nha Trang, Dong Nai, Can Tho and finally Ho Chi Minh City. In all, it reached more than 200,000 fans
and millions of radio listeners and TV viewers.

Vietnam hasn’t previously attracted such numbers to outdoor concerts, and with Rock Storm 2010 came growing pains like crowd control and Black Market ticket availability.
However the tour has developed a lot since 2009 in terms of sound and lighting, and the set changes were in particular slick and well rehearsed.
Rock Storm’s show sound director was renowned Japanese engineer, Masaaki Azuma, who has handled sound control for famous international shows, including Madonna, Oasis, Under World, Metallica, and Fuji Rock Festival.

An Outline Butterfly line array system consisting of CDH483 Hi-Packs and supplemented by SubTech 218 subwoofers was used at some of the concerts, as Fantasy Show & Light’s Dinh Viet Hug explained:
‘We needed to provide all round coverage for up to 35,000 people at these stadiums, but the television broadcasters insisted that the PA system had to be compact.
Fortunately, the Butterfly system provides high SPLs and even coverage, and is relatively small in size so that it doesn’t block the broadcasters view of the stage.
We are looking forward to taking stock of the new Outline Mantas system, which can be used alongside the Butterfly speakers as supplementary fills or on their own for smaller events.’

Vendôme (France), October 2009 – The Minotaure complex just bought a new Outline sound reinforcement system, comprising twelve Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. speakers and two SubTech 218 SP subwoofers, controlled by an Outline Genius 26 unit.

Located in the centre of Vendôme, the ‘Le Minotaure’ complex has a total area of 1,500 square metres. It hosts a 769-seat theatre hall, a multi-purpose hall (holding 400 people seated and 600 standing), several smaller meeting rooms and a naturally illuminated foyer for exhibitions. ‘Le Minotaure’ was inaugurated in 2002, and has hosted numerous shows since – music, theatre, dance etc.

Nevertheless, the theater hall suffered from poor acoustics. The coverage was uneven, and the stereo image unbalanced. In 2009, it was decided to replace the front of house reinforcement system.

Several systems were compared – among them, a Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. vertical line array, lent by Outline’s French distributor Audio2 (www.outline.audio2.fr). This system passed listening tests and the theatre hall now hosts six elements per side, plus two SubTech 218 SP subwoofers and a Genius 26 controller.

The Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is a bi-amped speaker enclosure equipped with a Double Parabolic Reflective Wave Guide (D.P.R.W.G.). This enables to adjust the horizontal directivity angle between 60° and 150°, in 15° steps. It is equipped with two high frequency transducers (compression drivers with a 1.75-inch diaphragm) and four low-mid (5-inch diameter) transducers.

The SubTech 218 SP subwoofer is fitted with two 18-inch loudspeakers in separate chambers. The Genius 26 processor (2-input, 6-output) operates at 24-bit/96 kHz, and implements many types of filters, with slopes of up to 24 dB/octave, and eight EQs with 2 shelving and 6 parametric bands each, plus limiters on every output.

For Sébastien Bargue, who works for Scène de Nuit (the contractor that supplied and installed the system), “The Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.’ asymmetrical variable horizontal directivity was one of the key factors for the choice of the system. Being able to control the dispersion is very important in halls with poor acoustics or inadequate treatment. The product solves this problem and gives a true stereo image, which is pretty rare for this kind of system.”

The huge tree at New York’s Rockefeller Center switched on: the sound rig was Outline

New York, 2nd December 2009 – Butterfly and mini-COM.P.A.S.S., two of the Vertical Line Arrays manufactured by Brescia’s Outline, were used on the occasion of the lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in New York, at the crossroads of 50th Street and Fifth Avenue.

America has celebrated Christmas round this tree – the most famous in the world and decorated with 20,000 coloured lights – since far-off 1931. Once again this year, there was a show that attracted thousands of people: this was also thanks to the spectacular ice rink, which, since it was opened in 1936, continues to draw people of all ages.

On stage to celebrate the event, amplified by the “Outlinearrays” – as well as other world-famous systems – stars such as Aretha Franklin, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart and even the Muppets, all performing great Christmas classics.

The show, transmitted live on NBC, was dedicated to US servicemen and women, who, along with the Big Apple’s mayor Michael Bloomberg, turned on the lights of tree, which will remain in front of the Rockefeller Center until January 7th 2010.

The company responsible for the audio was PRG (www.prg.com) – a famous American firm with branches worldwide that works at top level in the entertainment sector.

The work of fine tuning the Outline rig was entrusted to PRG sound engineer Matt Bell, who stated: “I chose the Butterfly system because we needed a line array that was compact in design and high powered. We hung all of the systems from Genie lifts, so we were limited to how much weight we had available. The Butterfly system allowed us to hang the correct amount of cabinets to cover the space. We were all very impressed with the coherence and intelligibility at 70 meters for such a small array. The frequency response was very flat and stable which allowed me good SPL levels without interfering with the broadcast mix. This added to the success of the event. My thanks go out to everyone at Outline for their help and support.”

Outline Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.

MSRP:
Shipdate: After Jan 1, 2008

The Outline Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is the only compact VLA on the world market offers the adjustment of directivity on the horizontal plane from 60 degrees to 150 degrees per side in relation to the axis, even asymmetrically.

Outline’s COM.P.A.S.S. - COMpact Polar Adjustable Sound System - is a loudspeaker element intended to form vertical line array but also able to be used as a stand-alone unit, like any other wide-range high performance enclosure. Its dispersion can be remote controlled as required via software, with wide variation on both planes, once the enclosure has been positioned alone or in multiples when used for sound reinforcement. In addition, a further adjustment system is included, which can also be remote controlled and enables to adjust the splay angle between elements when used as a vertical line array. Moreover, to facilitate dispersion adjustment to the utmost, by means of luminous beams, a laser system shows the aiming of the axes of each element’s HF section and highlights the limits of the horizontal coverage area.

Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is a compact, ultra-light (50.7 pounds) self-powered element equipped with six loudspeakers: four high- efficiency 5-inch mid-woofers with twin neodymium magnetic circuit and two compression drivers with a 1.75-inch diaphragm, fitted with two D.P.R.W.G. waveguides (Outline patent). There are 16 possible combinations of horizontal coverage, including asymmetric ones, which can be exploited according to the audience and acoustic properties of the environment in which the sound has to be reinforced. The flying system’s mechanism offers the necessary precision for the foreseen adjustments with a resolution of just 0.5 degrees per step between the elements. In addition, the intelligent design of the mechanism itself facilitates the positioning of individual elements; mounting the VLA is a job that takes just a few minutes and does not require any physical strain.

A new chapter in professional sound reinforcement history has been opened, and the ambitious design combining “Mind, PC and Enclosure” in fact has became a reality, first with COM.P.A.S.S., and now, with Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.

OUTLINE PRESS BULLETINFlero (Brescia) Italy, Tuesday 13th October 2009

Outline appoints North American Sales Force

Company extends its coverage to the world’s most important market

Outline, which inaugurated its USA branch (Outline North America LLC) just a few months ago, has already expanded its frontiers. In fact, representation of the brand is complete throughout North America, including Canada.

A recent workshop was held – jointly organized by Outline’s Brescia HQ and the branch office in Farmingdale (NY) – and with a touch of pride, the network of US representatives officially took shape. States now covered are all except OH, Western PA, WVA.

Outline’s Giorgio Biffi chaired the workshop. After providing training for the sixty original products in the company’s catalog, he introduced a pre-release version of OpenArray, the avant-garde control and 3D simulation software, written by the Italian R&D team. This really conveyed to the American attendees the philosophy and key principles on which Outline has been based since 1973, the year of it was founded.

Biffi commented: “It was the first time we had officially presented our identity under the discerning eyes of some of the most respected professionals of the pro audio industry, whom we are now proud to call our representatives. As CEO of the company, my hope was to pass on the concept that is so well summed up in our long-standing motto: ‘The Sound of Big Ideas’. He added: “In the brief two days of the workshop, two days of was important to ‘anoint’ the participants, reminding them clearly of Outline’s mission, which, simply stated, is ‘to conceive, design and manufacture loudspeaker systems, electronics and ‘special’ acoustic components, with unmistakably distinctive features, characterized by high-level innovation and performance at the absolute top end of the professional Sound Reinforcement industry’. In fact, now more than ever before, I believe that the practical application of this motto has become a must.”

Thomas Bensen, industry veteran at the helm of Outline North America LCC as VP and Director of Operations, comments: “We expect great results from the American market, which is the most prestigious and important market in the world. We are truly excited by the commercial success of Butterfly, mini-COM.P.A.S.S. and MANTAS in particular in other world markets and felt the time was right to present Outline as its own brand and identity to North America. The response has been extremely positive with unprecedented results in a very short time. Looking forward, with new products and technologies on the near horizon, 2010 already has the makings of a record year.”

The famous folk-rock singer/songwriter’s top-grade sound comes across thanks to Outlinearray

Brescia, 14th July 2009 – Piazza della Loggia packed with a warm gratified audience was the perfect setting for the show by Tracy Chapman, the famous US singer/songwriter with a poetic intimate character.

The reproduction of her intense voice, along with her acoustic guitar, the bongos and that combination of warm sounds for which Tracy has been admired for over twenty years, was achieved thanks also to Outline Butterfly: a loudspeaker system that in itself is light-weight and compact (34 kg and 70x60x24cm), but in the case of Piazza della Loggia was made up of just 14+14 Hi-Pack units per side (each equipped with four 8” woofers  and a 3” compression driver).

The bottom end was reproduced by 7+7 Outline Victor Live subs (2x18” – 110x55x60cm and 78 kg) and LAB 21 infra-subs (just two units positioned in the centre): all the cabinets were laid out in a cardioid configuration, to keep the stage clear of excessive low frequencies. Four Outline Micra II enclosures, installed in the edge of the stage, were used as front-fill systems, for the benefit of the front rows of the audience.

Also to ensure the audio chain the utmost efficiency, the amplification of the signals – fed from a Digidesign console – was entrusted to Outline T7 units: these power amplifiers are also ultra-light (12 kg) and compact (each requires just one standard 19” rack unit of space – a feature no other unit on the world market is able to offer).

Cipiesse Produzioni per lo Spettacolo (http://www.cipiesse-bs.it/) – the owner of the Outlinearray system – was the Brescia rental firm handling the entire operation.

Marco Riva, head of Cipiesse and production manager, comments: “The set-up of the equipment necessary for an event of this level was carried out in record time and extremely professionally; but the audio, for which we once again received congratulations from the artist’s (talented) FOH engineer, was particularly worthy of mention.”

Giancarlo Paladini, free-lance system engineer working on behalf of Cipiesse, commented: “What the arrays fed out was so exact that the concert seemed to ‘breathe’ – I mean it was utmost simplicity, harmony and pure listening pleasure. After the first fifteen minutes, such a great entente had been created between Chapman and the audience that it was necessary to remind oneself that there was amplification involved (the rig was also almost invisible to the eye…).

There was a limpid clarity on the mid-high frequencies and warmth on the low ones, which were powerful and solid, full-bodied but also will controlled.

The small number of Hi-Packs fielded didn’t stop us from working with a considerable safety margin, since the rig was running at 50% of its potential. The great resolution in the ‘body’ of the sound gave the (rare) sensation of being almost able to ”touch” the music (it’s hard to explain): rather like being in the warm welcoming lounge of one’s home, acoustically perfect and filled with great music – fed out by a very expensive high-end system…in actual fact, we were in a square 90 metres long and 40 wide, all perfectly covered right to the last rows – no peaks or gaps at any frequency – and with an (undistorted) sound pressure of up to 130 decibels…we think that achieving all these factors all at once isn't something that happens every day. Careful placement of the subs (with a cardioid configuration) enabled us to keep the stage free of infra-low frequencies - a benefit for the artists and the show itself.”

OUTLINE PRESS BULLETIN…
Flero - Brescia - Italy, Thursday, 2nd July 2009

Outline at Theatre National de Strasbourg

France’s second most important theatre’s sound has the Outline brand

Strasburg, France, June 2009 – An Outline loudspeaker system made up of Doppia II point source enclosures has been chosen as the sound reinforcement system for Theatre National de Strasbourg, France’s second most famous  theatre, located in a luxurious building in the city’s so-called imperial district.

A member of the UTE (Union of Theatres of Europe), the TNS has an international image and boasts an extremely modern organization; it has had the status of “National Theatre” since 1972 and is the only one of the five theatres with this classification outside the French capital.

With fifteen to twenty productions per season and approximately two hundred performances per year, it is an exceptional theatre all-round and offers a busy highly interesting program. The TNS hosts a permanent theatre company, the Ecole Suprieure d'Art dramatique drama school and two halls for shows. This set-up is completed by the Studio Kabl, with two supplementary halls, rehearsal and work rooms and administration facilities, as well as scenography and costume workshops.

The new Outline system debuted on the occasion of the first of Hamlet, in the Bernard-Marie Kolts hall (with Matthias Langhoff).

The TNS hosts four permanently installed Doppia II 9075 systems, supported by four DVS 118 SW subs (all in groups of two, for the dress and upper circles). Two Doppia II 5040 (with a longer throw) cover the stage and four Outline DVS 10 multi-purpose enclosures (also in groups of two) are used for the orchestra and as a centre cluster respectively.

Signal amplification and processing is entrusted to eight Outline T5 power amplifiers. The work of installation and fine tuning was carried out by Outline’s exclusive French distributor AUDIO (www.outline.audio2.fr), along with associate firm Scne de Nuit.

Didier Rupin of AUDIO comments: “The expectations were not easy to satisfy, as they were high from many points of view: acoustic, technical and aesthetic. But the distinctive characteristics of Outline products were able to provide TNS technical staff all the responses. One of the most important aspects of the client’s brief was to achieve outstandingly uniform sound, which had to be very well balanced at all sound pressure levels: here too the result was achieved. The TNS audio team, led by Caroll Duthrage, also specified the need for centralized control of the amplifiers, as well as the digital inputs, and the new Outline T5 power amplifiers, equipped with Ethernet port and DSP card, ensured the solution: they are all controlled by a single PC via  (dedicated) software, which enables everything to be kept under control, including phase alignment, a function the team of TNS sound engineers puts to good use.”

Outline 'Butterflies' for the P.C. Richard & Son Theater in New York

New York, USA - SIA Acoustics (www.siaacoustics.com) has recently completed the design and commissioning of the P.C. Richard & Son Theater in TriBeCa, NYC. The 5,500 square foot theater will serve as a live performance, recording, and broadcast space for Clear Channel Radio, which includes New York stations Q1043, Z100, WKTU, Power 105.1 and Lite-fm.

To meet the theater's demanding performance requirements, two four-element arrays of Outline "Butterfly" C.D.H. 483 loudspeakers were specified, powered by Outline T7 amplifiers. Low-frequency reinforcement is provided by six Outline LAB 15 SP subwoofers, arranged as three cardioid pairs under the stage. For delay, one array of three Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered line array loudspeakers is employed, with additional fill provided by Micra II SP self-powered loudspeakers. Both the Outline T7 amplifiers and the Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered loudspeaker include on-board DSP and networked control capabilities. To facilitate the flexible nature of the space, the T7 amplifiers are mounted to the rear of the Butterfly rigging bars via custom rigging hardware, designed by McLaren Engineering. For stage foldback, four Outline H.A.R.D. 45 SP and ten H.A.R.D. 115 SP monitors are employed.

"The Butterfly product readily fulfilled the venue's need for an industry-accepted, high-power, robust system in an extremely compact footprint," says Steve Sockey, partner at SIA Acoustics. "A-level touring artists can use this space without feeling like there's any technical compromise because of it's size."

In fact, the unique size of the theater and the need for comprehensive production made designing the technical systems particularly challenging. Careful coordination with the project team was required in determining elements such as loudspeaker suspension points and equipment locations.

"The P.C. Richards Theater represents a trend that we've seen growing in recent years. More and more, we are being approached by clients wanting to do no-compromise full-scale production in increasingly intimate spaces. In these types of venues, the importance of careful coordination between the trades is even more critical -- there is simply no physical room for oversight or error," says Adam Shulman, consultant at SIA Acoustics.

Other notable system components include two complete 64-channel Digidesign Profile live mixing systems in the theater and a Digidesign ICON D-Control ES based Pro Tools HD recording system in the control room, each supplied by a four-way transformer-isolated splitter. Additional infrastructure is provided throughout the venue to support a variety of configurations, as well as any artist-provided equipment (i.e. analog mixing consoles, at each position etc.). Every field connection terminates at over twenty analog, AES, CAT6, fiber, and coaxial patch bays in the control room, allowing the theater staff to readily adapt the technical systems for a number of genres, including live performances, video shoots, and cinema.

The theater opened in early May 2009 with performances by Tinted Windows and Green Day.

A flight of “Butterflies” for the Pope

Outline audio for over 50,000 worshippers at Amman stadium, in Jordan

Amman, Jordan, 10th May 2009 – Butterfly, the famous Vertical Line Array manufactured by Outline of Brescia, was used for the sound reinforcement at the large mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI at Amman international stadium, before 50,000 worshippers.

The mass was accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra and a 200-strong choir.

For the faultless acoustic coverage of the venue, Events AVP (exclusive Outline distributor for Jordan) used – thanks to the support of some local rental companies with the Outlinearray – a system comprising a hundred Butterfly Hi-Packs and thirty-two Subtech 218 subwoofers; all powered by T-series amplifiers.

With a view to this event, Events AVP also decided to increase its stock of Outlinearray, purchasing twenty-four additional CDH 483 Hi-packs and twelve Subtech 218. For “front-fill” work, the audio design featured twelve multi-purpose Outline DVS 12 (1x12” – 1x3”) enclosures, while the monitor set-up for the Pope and the cardinals consisted in ten Outline Micra II SP, systems well known for their successful combination of intelligibility and high SPL before feedback, in spite of their light weight (6.5 kg) and ultra-compact dimensions.

FOH engineer and production manager Vincenzo Testa of Events AVP commented: “At a distance of 120 metres, I had full voice intelligibility and the bottom end sounded great.”

The fine tuning of the Butterfly rig was entrusted to Carlo Gennaro, a system engineer with considerable experience in the use of the Outlinearray along with the relative aiming software, the Outline VIP (Vector Implementation Protocol).

He commented: “The requests of the Vatican audio technicians, in particular the person responsible for the Pope’s voice, Roberto Calvigioni, were very precise, but once again we exceeded all expectations; the distribution of the people in the stadium meant extra care had to be taken to keep the sound level at a very constant 105 decibels for 270 degrees of coverage around the stage during the event. I know the Butterfly system very well – it’s a reference point at world level in terms of precision, acoustic transparency and phase coherence – and I’m always happy to be able to use it.”

이번에도 Carlo Gennaro가 시스템 디자인을 한 모양이다. 오늘은 집에가면 전화좀 해봐야겠다.. 맨날 바쁘셔서리~

Outline System chosen for the Healing Place Church

One of America’s top 25 most innovative churches has chosen Butterfly and mini-COM.P.A.S.S. Outline loudspeakers

Baton Rouge, LA - USA - The Healing Place Church, listed as one of “America’s Most Innovative Churches” (Outreach magazine, Jan/Feb 2008), is a multi-purpose facility that includes a live worship space as well as a complete suite of production spaces for video and audio recording and broadcast. Through the use of extensive technical infrastructure, the production spaces can serve worship in the main sanctuary, or be configured to operate completely independently.

The Sanctuary’s main sound system will consist of three arrays of fourteen Outline "Butterfly" C.D.H. 483 elements each, powered by Outline T7 amplifiers. Low-frequency reinforcement is provided by 10 Outline Subtech 218 SP subwoofers. For delays, six arrays of six mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered line array loudspeakers and two C.D.L. 1815 cardioid subwoofers (full-range and subwoofer loudspeakers suspended together on a custom rigging frame) are used. Front fill for the first audience rows are provided by Outline MICRA II SP self-powered loudspeakers. Both the Outline T7 amplifiers and the Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered loudspeaker include on-board DSP and networked control capabilities.

For stage foldback, six H.A.R.D. 45 SP and eight H.A.R.D. 115 SP monitors are specified. “Outline loudspeakers were a logical choice, given the comprehensive technical demands of this project. As a compliment to the extensive sound system infrastructure and room acoustical design in the Sanctuary, we are confident that members of the Church will enjoy an unparalleled worship experience” said Steve Sockey, Partner at SIA Acoustics.

Other notable system components include two complete 80-channel Digidesign Profile live mixing systems and a Digidesign ICON-based Pro Tools HD recording system in the production spaces. Transformer-isolated splitters provide signal to each system, as well as the truck bay to accommodate remote broadcast and recording vehicles.

The installation at the Healing Place Church will be completed by September 2009.
