A very special tribute to the life and work of legendary American singer, songwriter, activist, poet and photographer John Denver recently took place at the 1STBankCenter in Broomfield, Colorado. To mark his commitments to humanitarian, sustainability and conservation causes the event was held on Earth Day, April 21st.
Hosted by Olivia Newton-John, a close friend of Denver and his family, the evening featured performances from a large roster of artists including Lee Ann Womack, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, John Oates, Trace Bundy and the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra. The show opened with Denver’s induction into the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame, the first artist to be so honoured, and also included performances from his first wife and his widow. The conclusion was a stirring finale where all the artists gathered onstage for a massed rendition of Denver’s most iconic song, ‘Rocky Mountain High’.
Sound production for the event was handled by Colorado natives Dowlen Sound who deployed a combination of Outline GTO, Butterfly and Mantas loudspeaker modules in the 6500-capacity venue. The main L&R system comprised 12 GTO plus four underhung Mantas modules per side while 16 Dowlen Sound subwoofers provided low frequency reinforcement. Eight Butterfly modules were deployed each side as ‘wraps’ to provide the necessary coverage width for seats near the stage sides.
Eric Satre of Dowlen Sound said, ‘For us and many sound providers like us, shows like this are an important part of our work but as one-offs they can be hard to do profitably. The fact that our Outline systems are quick to rig and de-rig with minimal crew, plus the ability to combine them seamlessly as required, really contributes to our operational efficiency in this type of event’.
Company owner Bret Dowlen mixed FOH for the entire show and commented afterwards, ‘Gigs like this are always a challenge because of the number of artists, the sheer quantity of instruments and the fact that there is always an element of the unknown! The only way to do it well is to use a flexible and accurate PA that can handle anything we throw at it, and that describes our Outline GTO, Butterfly and Mantas systems perfectly. With 105 inputs from the stage and the PA flown 8 feet upstage of the downstage edge the rear rejection and coherence of GTO has proven to be unrivalled, in fact this show may not have been possible with any other system. On a personal note it was very nice to hear John’s music again after a long absence. I was his system engineer for his dates in this region for about 10 years. Making it sound like it was supposed to was much easier with GTO and the amazing engineering that has gone into this box’.
Britannia Row and Robert Lawrence keep American football fans partying with Italian audio systems
London, Wembley Stadium (Oct. 25th 2010) – The event was the USA coming to London in the shape of total American indulgence and razzmatazz - yes - American football. A sport that’s not just tough, but combines a good day out with a full day’s entertainment. October 25th 2010 saw the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Denver Broncos. To make this extravaganza work, two production companies were engaged to provide sound for the 83,000 revellers.
Britannia Row Productions covered pitch-side entertainment with 14 individual stacks of Outline’s Butterfly Line Array consisting of 4 x CDH 483 hi-packs and 1 x Subtech sub bass powered by T9 amplifiers strategically placed on the pitch’s perimeter.
A further two arrays were deployed for the tailgate stage placed at one end of the pitch for pre-match entertainment. This system consisted of two arrays of 8 CDH 483s and 4 x Subtechs either side.
Pre-match entertainment was provided by New Jersey rockers My Chemical Romance, closely followed by Blues legend Jeff Beck, who played the UK’s national anthem in his own inimitable style.
Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child then took to the stage and performed the US national anthem “The Star-Spangled banner”.
After the match, the party for VIPs moved up to the fifth level of Wembley Stadium, where Robert Lawrence Creative Solutions built a stage and backdrop for the NFL/Virgin Atlantic event.
Audio supplied by Robert Lawrence Creative Solutions - a long-time fan and deployer of Outline systems - consisted of Doppia 9075 point source cabinets and Subtechs powered by T7 amplifiers.
Robert Lawrence Creative Solutions also covered all the outside entertainment, with many marquees and outside stages covered by Outline’s DVS series, LAB15s and Kangaroo systems. All in all, Outline had it covered!
The match ended with the San Francisco 49ers beating the Denver Broncos 24-16.
‘Butterflies’ at the service of the world’s major leaders and CEOs, fromTony Blairto Michael Dell
Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), January 24/27 2010 – Among the corporate events of considerable international importance, Outline informs that its loudspeaker systems were used to amplify the 2010 edition of the Global Competitiveness Forum, held at the Four Seasons Hotel, in the Kingdom Centre (winner of an award as the best skyscraper of the world for design).
Founded by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) in 2006, the Global Competitiveness Forum, a meeting held annually, is regularly transmitted by TV broadcastersAl Jazeera, NBC and Bloomberg, as well as the world’s best-known news media.
Through the years, the GCF has attracted thousands of eminent political leaders, multinational company CEOs, ministers, government officials, intellectuals and academicians from every corner of the globe, with the sole aim of meeting and exchanging ideas.
The event’s mission is to increase awareness and enthusiasm on the challenges of competitiveness, critically assessing its aspects in relation to international trade, innovation, the environment (new forms of energy), development of human resources and sustainability; in short, at GCF 2010, talk focussed on the consequences that determine the fact of “becoming competitive” on a global scale.
Among the most illustrious speakers, Tony Blair (UK Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007), Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Inc., Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chief Executive Officer of General Electric, John Chambers, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Systems, James Wolfensohn, 9thPresident of the World Bank Group, Robert Greifeld, Chief Executive Officer of the NASDAQ OMX Group, Alessandro Profumo, Chief Executive Officer of the UniCredit Group and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Austria, Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of Pininfarina S.p.A., Enrico D’Onofrio, Corporate General Manager of MV Agusta, Daniel Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at Yale University, Delos M. Cosgrove M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Clinic, Stephen D. Pryor, CEO of ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Glenn Lowry, Director MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art, NY) and many other outstanding personalities.
Due to the event’s importance at international level, Events AVP, whose chairman is Mr. Sharif Tabbara – exclusive Outline distributor for Jordan – was selected, as it is a company with the necessary experience for supplying the sound reinforcement system and audio equipment necessary for the multiple applications required in situations of this type.
Moreover, in November 2009, Events AVP – again with Outline material – was called in for the sound reinforcement of another equally prestigious event, the World Economic Forum in Dubai.
As far as the audio at GFC 2010 was concerned, sound reinforcement in the conference hall (50 x 40 x 9 metres), involved the use of just 6+6 Butterfly Hi-Packs and 2+2 Subtech 218 SP. Control and power were courtesy of a YAMAHA M7CL console, XTA processor and Outline T series amplifiers.
As monitors, the illustrious speakers alternating on stage had at their disposal two compact Outline Micra II SP enclosures, whereas six units were used on front-fill duty to cover the first rows of seats.
The rooms allocated to interviews by Al Jazeera, NBC and Bloomberg were equipped with six more Micra II SP, whereas four Outline DVS 12 enclosures (in pairs) were used to reinforce the sound in other two halls (each seating sixty people), hosting the academicians and university professors.
Audio chief and FOH engineer, Carlo Gennaro, commented: “In this case, there was no need to work at 135 dB, but to cover the audience perfectly with a very ‘well-mannered’ SPL. There again, we had no alternative, considering the position of the microphones compared to the PA. But, as I’ve repeated for years, with a minimum of energy, the Butterfly gives a wonderful intelligibility – it almost seems to ‘breathe’, and it doesn’t matter at what distance. It goes exactly where I point it and you can feel the sound ‘in your face’. I give the merit for this to its waveguide, one of the few that works superbly…in fact, I’ll go as far as to put in writing a thought I have in common with several of my colleagues: on the world market, there are numerous line arrays, but on the ‘mid-high’ frequencies there are only two items able to give the same performance are this device …”
The huge tree at New York’s Rockefeller Center switched on: the sound rig was Outline
New York, 2nd December 2009 – Butterfly and mini-COM.P.A.S.S., two of the Vertical Line Arrays manufactured by Brescia’s Outline, were used on the occasion of the lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in New York, at the crossroads of 50th Street and Fifth Avenue.
America has celebrated Christmas round this tree – the most famous in the world and decorated with 20,000 coloured lights – since far-off 1931. Once again this year, there was a show that attracted thousands of people: this was also thanks to the spectacular ice rink, which, since it was opened in 1936, continues to draw people of all ages.
On stage to celebrate the event, amplified by the “Outlinearrays” – as well as other world-famous systems – stars such as Aretha Franklin, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart and even the Muppets, all performing great Christmas classics.
The show, transmitted live onNBC, was dedicated to US servicemen and women, who, along with the Big Apple’s mayor Michael Bloomberg, turned on the lights of tree, which will remain in front of the RockefellerCenter until January 7th 2010.
The company responsible for the audio was PRG (www.prg.com) – a famous American firm with branches worldwide that works at top level in the entertainment sector.
The work of fine tuning the Outline rig was entrusted to PRG sound engineer Matt Bell, who stated: “I chose the Butterfly system because we needed a line array that was compact in design and high powered. We hung all of the systems from Genie lifts, so we were limited to how much weight we had available. The Butterfly system allowed us to hang the correct amount of cabinets to cover the space. We were all very impressed with the coherence and intelligibility at 70 meters for such a small array. The frequency response was very flat and stable which allowed me good SPL levels without interfering with the broadcast mix. This added to the success of the event. My thanks go out to everyone at Outline for their help and support.”
The Outlinearray amplifies the Italian tenor’s concert at the Buta Palace in Azerbaijan
Azerbaijan – A system made up of twenty Outline Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Packs and eight SubTech 218 was recently involved in a prestigious permanent installation for sound reinforcement at the “Buta” Palace, in the city of Baku, Azerbaijan.
Precisely at the “Buta” Palace in May 2009, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and soprano Paola Sanguinetti – accompanied by the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Orchestra – held a concert on the occasion of the 5th Anniversary of the “Heydar Aliyev” Foundation.
Regarding the use of the Outlinearray, the event’s FOH engineer, Andrea Taglia, comments: “Although I’m Italian, I’d never had the opportunity before of working with Outline’s Butterfly with the necessary calm. Using it for this concert with Andrea Bocelli and soprano Paola Sanguinetti, accompanied by the orchestra, was a really pleasant surprise: as well as its well known extremely compact dimensions, which in venues with such carefully designed architecture are always a great help when positioning sound reinforcement systems in the best way, I was considerably struck by the timbre and very uniform frequency response, as well as the simply perfect acoustic coverage angle. I have rarely worked with a rig able to ensure dispersion that is so well controlled and true to the manufacturer’s specifications: thanks to this, the job of aligning the rig was easy and very satisfying. I hope to be able to work with this system again in the future, as I’m sure I’ll obtain the best results.”
“Buta” Palace is a venue hosting concerts, conferences and other important events. Designed and built with no compromises from the point of view of aesthetics and technically speaking, it is used by the government and Azerbaijan’s president’s family.
As well as the Butterfly systems, this permanent installation – by Sofit Light (www.sofitlight.ru), one of Outline’s Russian dealers - includes a series of Micra II and Micra II SP (self-powered) enclosures for medium/short throw distribution of highly intelligible sound during banquets. These enclosures areinstalled in groups of four in the chandeliers.
The power amplifiers driving the Butterfly VLA are also Outline (T7), as are the Genius 26 signal processors. The digital mixing consoles are by Innovason
Outline 'Butterflies' for the P.C. Richard & Son Theater in New York
New York, USA - SIA Acoustics (www.siaacoustics.com)has recently completed the design and commissioning of the P.C. Richard & Son Theater in TriBeCa, NYC. The 5,500 square foot theater will serve as a live performance, recording, and broadcast space for Clear Channel Radio, which includes New York stations Q1043, Z100, WKTU, Power 105.1 and Lite-fm.
To meet the theater's demanding performance requirements, two four-element arrays of Outline"Butterfly" C.D.H. 483 loudspeakers were specified, powered by Outline T7 amplifiers. Low-frequency reinforcement is provided by six Outline LAB 15 SP subwoofers, arranged as three cardioid pairs under the stage. For delay, one array of three Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered line array loudspeakers is employed, with additional fill provided by Micra II SP self-powered loudspeakers. Both the Outline T7 amplifiers and the Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered loudspeaker include on-board DSP and networked control capabilities. To facilitate the flexible nature of the space, the T7 amplifiers are mounted to the rear of the Butterfly rigging bars via custom rigging hardware, designed by McLaren Engineering. For stage foldback, four OutlineH.A.R.D. 45 SP and ten H.A.R.D. 115 SP monitors are employed.
"The Butterfly product readily fulfilled the venue's need for an industry-accepted, high-power, robust system in an extremely compact footprint," says Steve Sockey, partner at SIA Acoustics. "A-level touring artists can use this space without feeling like there's any technical compromise because of it's size."
In fact, the unique size of the theater and the need for comprehensive production made designing the technical systems particularly challenging. Careful coordination with the project team was required in determining elements such as loudspeaker suspension points and equipment locations.
"The P.C.RichardsTheater represents a trend that we've seen growing in recent years. More and more, we are being approached by clients wanting to do no-compromise full-scale production in increasingly intimate spaces. In these types of venues, the importance of careful coordination between the trades is even more critical -- there is simply no physical room for oversight or error," says Adam Shulman, consultant at SIA Acoustics.
Other notable system components include two complete 64-channel Digidesign Profile live mixing systems in the theater and a Digidesign ICON D-Control ES based Pro Tools HD recording system in the control room, each supplied by a four-way transformer-isolated splitter. Additional infrastructure is provided throughout the venue to support a variety of configurations, as well as any artist-provided equipment (i.e. analog mixing consoles, at each position etc.). Every field connection terminates at over twenty analog, AES, CAT6, fiber, and coaxial patch bays in the control room, allowing the theater staff to readily adapt the technical systems for a number of genres, including live performances, video shoots, and cinema.
The theater opened in early May 2009 with performances by Tinted Windows and Green Day.

A flight of “Butterflies” for the Pope
Outline audio for over 50,000 worshippers at Amman stadium, in Jordan
Amman, Jordan, 10th May 2009 – Butterfly, the famous Vertical Line Array manufactured by Outline of Brescia, was used for the sound reinforcement at the large mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI at Amman international stadium, before 50,000 worshippers.
The mass was accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra and a 200-strong choir.
For the faultless acoustic coverage of the venue, Events AVP (exclusive Outline distributor for Jordan) used – thanks to the support of some local rental companies with the Outlinearray – a system comprising a hundred Butterfly Hi-Packs and thirty-two Subtech 218 subwoofers; all powered by T-series amplifiers.
With a view to this event, Events AVP also decided to increase its stock of Outlinearray, purchasing twenty-four additional CDH 483 Hi-packs and twelve Subtech 218. For “front-fill” work, the audio design featured twelve multi-purpose Outline DVS 12 (1x12” – 1x3”) enclosures, while the monitor set-up for the Pope and the cardinals consisted inten Outline Micra II SP, systems well known for their successful combination of intelligibility and high SPL before feedback, in spite of their light weight (6.5 kg) and ultra-compact dimensions.
FOH engineer and production manager Vincenzo Testa of Events AVP commented: “At a distance of120 metres, I had full voice intelligibility and the bottom end sounded great.”
The fine tuning of the Butterfly rig was entrusted to Carlo Gennaro, a system engineer with considerable experience in the use of the Outlinearray along with the relative aiming software, the Outline VIP (Vector Implementation Protocol).
He commented: “The requests of the Vatican audio technicians, in particular the person responsible for the Pope’s voice, Roberto Calvigioni, were very precise, but once again we exceeded all expectations;the distribution of the people in the stadium meant extra care had to be taken to keep the sound level at a very constant 105 decibels for 270 degrees of coverage around the stage during the event. I know the Butterfly system very well – it’s a reference point at world level in terms of precision, acoustic transparency and phase coherence – and I’m always happy to be able to use it.”
이번에도 Carlo Gennaro가 시스템 디자인을 한 모양이다. 오늘은 집에가면 전화좀 해봐야겠다.. 맨날 바쁘셔서리~
Outline System chosen for the Healing Place Church
One of America’s top 25 most innovative churches has chosen Butterfly and mini-COM.P.A.S.S. Outline loudspeakers
Baton Rouge, LA - USA -The Healing Place Church, listed as one of “America’s Most Innovative Churches” (Outreach magazine, Jan/Feb 2008), is a multi-purpose facility that includes a live worship space as well as a complete suite of production spaces for video and audio recording and broadcast. Through the use of extensive technical infrastructure, the production spaces can serve worship in the main sanctuary, or be configured to operate completely independently.
The Sanctuary’s main sound system will consist of three arrays of fourteen Outline "Butterfly" C.D.H. 483 elements each, powered by Outline T7 amplifiers. Low-frequency reinforcement is provided by 10 Outline Subtech 218 SP subwoofers. For delays, six arrays of six mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered line array loudspeakers and two C.D.L. 1815 cardioid subwoofers (full-range and subwoofer loudspeakers suspended together on a custom rigging frame) are used. Front fill for the first audience rows are provided by Outline MICRA II SP self-powered loudspeakers. Both the Outline T7 amplifiers and the Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. self-powered loudspeaker include on-board DSP and networked control capabilities.
For stage foldback, six H.A.R.D. 45 SP and eight H.A.R.D. 115 SP monitors are specified. “Outline loudspeakers were a logical choice, given the comprehensive technical demands of this project. As a compliment to the extensive sound system infrastructure and room acoustical design in the Sanctuary, we are confident that members of the Church will enjoy an unparalleled worship experience” said Steve Sockey, Partner at SIA Acoustics.
Other notable system components include two complete 80-channel Digidesign Profile live mixing systems and a Digidesign ICON-based Pro Tools HD recording system in the production spaces. Transformer-isolated splitters provide signal to each system, as well as the truck bay to accommodate remote broadcast and recording vehicles.
The installation at the HealingPlaceChurch will be completed by September 2009.
72 Butterflies at the service of the world’s sexiest pop-dance quintet
Outline reports that the European tour by the Pussycat Dolls – Doll Domination tour – was amplified by Britannia Row Productions’ Butterfly Outlinearray.
The world’s sexiest pop-dance quintet – led by Nicole Scherzinger, the group’s singer-dancer leader as well as fiancée of McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton – has sold over seven million records and is constantly in the charts.
The phenomenal intense show (28 dates in just over a month) is based on a top-grade production; “house full” signs were up at all the gigs, in the most important arenas in England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Montecarlo, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland, Austria, Serbia, Czech Republic and Slovakia. From the month of March the Doll Domination tour will continue in the United States and later in Asia and Australia.
On the occasion of the concert on February 12th 2009 at Zurich’s Hallenstadion, sound reinforcement consisted in 56 Outline Butterfly Hi-Packs (16+16 for the main front hangs, 10+10 for the sides and 2+2 for “front-fill”) backed up by 26 Subtech 218 (12 either side and 2 in the centre); two Outline DVS 15 multi-purpose enclosures (1x15”; 1x3”) were also used to ensure perfect coverage for the front rows of the audience. The entire rig was powered by Outline T9 power amps (2 x 4800W, a single rack unit and just twelve kilos each).
The technician in charge of the Butterfly system on behalf of Brit Row is system engineer Adam Smith.
The American FOH engineer is Bryan ‘Froggy’ Cross, who commented regarding the audio system manufactured by the Brescia company: “We found come locations - both large and small - that were acoustically ‘complicated’, in England and Germany in particular, but this PA (Outline Butterfly) is very adaptable, from the most impressive stadium down to small venues, enabling us to use 12, 8 clusters, or even stacked systems. This is something big PAs aren’t able to do. My favourite set-up consists in 16+16 Butterfly Hi-Pack enclosures for the front and 12+12 Hi-Packs for the sides, 26 Subtechs, divided into 12+12 at the side and two stage centre. In larger venues, I add 8 enclosures per side for delay purposes. What’s my opinion of the system? That it’s one of the best designs in recent years. For the Doll Domination Tour, after rejecting the idea of a big PA, we looked for a medium powered system with the best possible quality and versatility. I tried a lot, but wasn’t satisfied. To get a good sound, I often had to work a lot with the processors; even if I got good coverage, I had to cope with poor mid-low frequencies, due to a lack of air movement. Then we tried Outline, and I thought: ‘heck, I’m a fan of Italian cars – now I’m also a fan of their audio systems!’ What further impressed me was the bottom end – in other words the Subtechs. The majority of spectators don’t just want to see and hear the show - they want to ’feel’ it. In Pop-Dance music like this, the bottom end is really important: there are low frequencies that in almost all the songs go from 60-65 Hz to 40 Hz and are very well defined; with a lot of subs used together, this part usually sounds very 'slappy’. The Subtechs on the other hand are absolutely full-bodied, precise and powerful. After the first concert with this rig, my partner, the lighting engineer, come over to me and said: ‘What have you done to the bass frequencies? Even my eyes were shaking!!’. I often understand if the system works by just looking at the crowd from my mixing platform. If there’s a good impact and I see the punters bopping on the bleachers, I know the system works. Plus, on this tour and with the current economic situation, dimensions and weight are also important factors. We’ve got eleven artics and the more we manage to reduce space occupied and load weight (Butterfly manages to do this), the less we spend on truck rental and petrol”.
