영국의 극작가 존 데니스(John Dennis, 1657-1734)는 1709년 'Appius and Virginia' 라는 작품을 무대에 올렸다. 그는 이 작품에서 천둥소리를 실감나게 하기 위해 양철 등을 이용해 천둥소리를 내는 장치를 발명해 사용했다. 첫 공연 직후, 극장주는 관객들이 찾아지도 않고 작품의 흥행성도 떨어지니 이 작품을 무대에서 내리자고 했다. 그는 극장주의 요청을 받아들였다.
그런데 얼마 후 같은 극장에서 Macbeth의 공연이 있었다. 첫 공연을 보다가 존 데니스는 자신이 발명한 천둥소리가 그대로 이 작품에 사용된 것을 알게 되었다. 이를 알게 된 존 데니스는 다름과 같은 말로 자신의 발명품이 도용된 것을 사람들에게 알렸다고 한다.
"That is my thunder, by God; the villains will play my thunder, but not my play" 신에게 맹세컨데 저건 내 천둥소리예요. 나쁜 놈들이 내 작품에서 써 보지도 못한 내 천둥소리로 공연하려고 합니다.
존 데니스의 이 말에서 유래된 표현이 steal one's thunder 이다. 이 표현은 '남의 아이디어를 훔쳐 세상에 알리다' 라는 의미이다. 예를 들어 이전 회의에서 내가 언급한 아이디어를 어떤 상사가 임원 회의에서 자신의 것인양 발표해 버릴 때, "He stole my thunder."(그가 내 아이디어를 도용했어) 라고 할 수 있다. 또 다른 예로, 친구들이 짬짝놀라게 해 주기 위해 비밀로 지켰던 결혼 얘기를 어떤 한 친구가 미리 다 알려버려 김이 새는 경우에도 사용할 수 있다.

돕는 다고 하기보다는 나에게는 좋은 기회가 또 한번 찾아 온 것이라고 생각 했다. 더 잘 해주지 못함에 미안했고.. 비루한 내 영어 실력에 아쉬움이 많이 남았으며, 비속어도 알아두는 것이 도움이 되겠다는 생각을.. 또.. 했다. 뭐.든.배.워.서.나.쁜.것.은.없.구.나.. 라고.. 생각도 했다. 대학 졸업까지 최저의 성적을 자랑(응?)하던 영어의 소유자 였던 나, 어떻게든 교양과목에서 조차도 꼭 꼭 피해가고 싶었던 유일한 과목 영어.. 나에겐 남북통일 만큼이나 현실속에 없었던 영어를 많이 모지라지만 언젠가부터 하게 되었고 이젠 그 지긋지긋 알파벳도 보기싫어하더너 내가 영어를 사랑하게 되었다. 즐기게 되었다. 6개월의 투자는 참 많은 변화를 가져다 주었다. 그래서.. 마지막 털어 넣었던 통장 잔고도 하나 아깝지 않았고.. 다른 포기했던 많은 것들이 헛된 포기가 아닌 값진 포기가 될 수 있었다. 참 감사한 일이다.
그리고 단편영화이지만 누군가의 인생과 철학이 담기고 피와 땀이 담긴, 누군가의 인생을 녹인 작품에 부족한 나의 일부를 녹여냈다. 이번 작업을 통해서 단편영화에 대해서 다시한번 생각해 보게 되는 좋은 경험이었다. 조금이라도 작품의 감독님에게 도움이 되었으면 좋겠다. 그것만으로도 나는 충분히 값진 일을 한 것일테니까..

어디 그 뿐이랴.. 아침에 신촌에서 왕십리로 바꾼 영어 수업.. 신촌 티쳐가 못내 마땅찮다는 주변의 피드백에 그래.. 이참에 분위기도 바꿔보고 더 열심히 마지막텀을 장식하자꾸나!!! 다부지게 맘 먹고 선택한 성동분원.. 헌데.. 허걱! 왕십리 역에서 역사를 빠져나가는 거리가 만만치 않더란 말이다. 계단을 오르내리기를 반복하면.. 도착하게되는 성동분원.. ㅠ.ㅠ 거기다 마치고 8시에 지하철 타면.. 하하.. 만원 타이밍 되어주신다. 어찌나 고된 길로만 골라 가는건지.. ^^; 그래도.. 한다! 내가 시작한거니까, 내가 멋지게 끝낼란다. 학교 일정이 만만치 않을 것 같다. 일하면서 공부를 다 해낼 수 있을까? 커리큘럼을 보니.. 이거뭐.. 붙잡고 공부만 하세요~~~~ 인 것 같은데.. ㅠ.ㅠ 주경야독.. 그들이 참 대단해 보이고 존경스럽다! 열심히 하자.. 이러다가 SDA졸업 이번 텀에 못하는건 아닌가.. 슬쩍 걱정스럽다. 하기사 한번에 패스하고 졸업하는 사람은 정말 찾기 어렵다고는 하더만은.. 어렵지 안되는건 아니잖아! ^^ 도전!!!
It was so long day same as yesterday.. even though I was very busy but I was very happy because I spend time with my friends who I loved them and have had relationship for a long time. I was bring my friend who is my favorite young girl her name is Sang-hyun. When I see her I feel like I'm looking my past through her.
I couldn't sleep through the night because we wanted to spent time together we talked alot through the night so I didn't want to go to sleep but I did because I have many thing to do today so I had to leave earlier from our place and I went to seoul again.
I stopped by home and I went to dentist for pulling off my wlsdom teeth after that I went to Chung-dam for taking photos of my friends weeding. She was beautiful.. and his husband was handsome.
I was very tired but I didn't want to go home before I'm doing something special so I recommanded to my other friends who I met them before some community of taking photos. We went to COEX for watching movies and we saw a '지.아이.조' It was very impact so I enjoyed that but my friends were not much..
Anyway I got home too late and today I woke up around 9 so I was nervous becase I had many things also so I awaked immediately.
I joined some seminar about How to speak English fluency and out of nervous.. that was awesome I needed it. I enjoyed that also. After the seminar I went to my office because I had meeting today at the other place for figure out a new project so I went their with my colleague. I've made effort alot for this project so I hope that I can get it..
마피아 영화를 보면 가끔 맘에 들지 않는 사람들을 다양한 용액에 담구는(응?) 장면이 나오죠. 양생중인 시멘트 반죽에다가 담구기도 하고 발에 돌을 매달아 강에 담구기도 하고, 다양한 액상의 성분에 다시 보고 싶지 않은 사람들을 집어넣는 것을 본 적이 있었을 겁니다. 여기에서 유래한 것인지는 모르겠지만 우리 말 속어에도 담구겠다거니 그만 담구라느니 하는 표현들이 쓰이는 것 같습니다. 영화 친구에서 장동건의 마지막 대사가 떠오르네요. “고마해라, 많이 묵었다아이가?”이 경우엔 사람의 몸에 연장(?)을 담구는 것을 “먹는다”라고(응?) 표현한 것이겠죠.
Deep-six가 뜻하는 게 바로 이런 뜻이겠습니다. 여기에서 Six는 Six feet의 준 말이고 보통 어른의 키 높이를 의미한다고 하네요. 우리말로는 ‘길’이 이에 해당하겠지요. 왜, 어렸을 때 수영하러 냇가에 가면 거긴 한 길이 넘으니까 위험하다는 둥 많이 들어 봤잖아요? 보통 양 팔을 좌우로 활짝 뻗으면 자기 키하고 비슷하다고 하고요.어쨌든 이 길이를 Fathom이라고 하는데, 영어로 딱 ‘한 길’이라는 뜻입니다. 미국에서는 보통 무덤 깊이를 이 정도로 팠다는군요.
Deep-six는 원래는 바다 가장 밑 쪽의 한 길을 뜻하는 말이었다죠. 뭔가 숨길 것이 있거나 보고 싶지 않은 것이 있을 때는 바다 가장 깊은 곳에 치워둔다는 뜻이 나중에 생겼구요.
