Outline announces the launch of training courses for audio technicians and system engineers

Outline has announced that at the end of November (29th and 30th) near Rome, Mods Art – which was recently appointed exclusive distributor for the Italian market – will hold the first training course addressing rental firms, system engineers, sound designers, audio technicians and others working in the professional Sound reinforcement world.

The courses, called O.C.S.E. (Outline Certified System Engineer), foresee two levels. The first is intended for professionals wishing to update their current knowledge, as well as aspiring engineers and technicians at the start of their career.

The second level (O.C.S.E. 2) is for those who already have a first-level certificate, as well as recognized professional technicians already working in the sector.

“In our opinion, the work of a system engineer, the person responsible for the fine-tuning of sound reinforcement systems, has undergone a rapid evolution in recent years, a change due to the spread of often revolutionary audio technology and the need for a more professional approach to the job, now considered as vital for events' success. This is why training is an indispensable aspect,” – comments Mods Art product specialist Davide Lombardi.

Passing the second level exam enables candidates to enter the O.T.N. (Outline Technicians Network), a group of qualified technicians at the disposal of all the rental companies in the Outline network.

Being part of the O.T.N. means having acquired specific preparation as far as Outline sound reinforcement systems are concerned. The certificate obtained after passing the exam will be an official guarantee of the level of professionalism achieved.

Mods Art sales manager Luigi Lombardi explains: “For audio technicians, certification and being a member of the network will have two main consequences - on one hand, an increase in their professional skills and, on the other, greater opportunities of work in the live sector.”

The tutors will include Outline engineer Giulio Gandini.

Level 1 O.C.S.E. courses (each open to a limited number of participants) will be held throughout Italy. The first will be on November 29th and 30th 2010 in a suggestive location near Rome.

Vietnam hasn’t previously attracted such numbers to outdoor concerts, and with Rock Storm 2010 came growing pains like crowd control and Black Market ticket availability.
However the tour has developed a lot since 2009 in terms of sound and lighting, and the set changes were in particular slick and well rehearsed.
Rock Storm’s show sound director was renowned Japanese engineer, Masaaki Azuma, who has handled sound control for famous international shows, including Madonna, Oasis, Under World, Metallica, and Fuji Rock Festival.

An Outline Butterfly line array system consisting of CDH483 Hi-Packs and supplemented by SubTech 218 subwoofers was used at some of the concerts, as Fantasy Show & Light’s Dinh Viet Hug explained:
‘We needed to provide all round coverage for up to 35,000 people at these stadiums, but the television broadcasters insisted that the PA system had to be compact.
Fortunately, the Butterfly system provides high SPLs and even coverage, and is relatively small in size so that it doesn’t block the broadcasters view of the stage.
We are looking forward to taking stock of the new Outline Mantas system, which can be used alongside the Butterfly speakers as supplementary fills or on their own for smaller events.’

Allen & Heath has created a one-off special edition of its popular Xone:4D mixer controller for renowned DJ endorser, Paul van Dyk.

“The 4D is the centrepiece of my set up and is based on the way I DJ. I have two computers on stage that are synced to each other: one has the synths, keyboards and controllers hooked up to it and the other is full of the audio material. The Xone:4D gives me control of everything I am using,” explains van Dyk. “I wanted rotary knobs instead of faders to give me finer control of the volume, and the feel is more precise.”

Used for the first time at ADE, Paul’s modified version includes VCA rotary faders rather than the standard linear faders. There is also custom-designed silk screening for the faceplate with Paul’s name in UV paint.

“One of the great things about the 4D is the great sound and the fact that everything on the mixer can be fully programmed so I can set it up to give me control to do some crazy crap!” he concludes.

중요한건.. d&b가 호주에서 제대로 한방 했구나.. 라는거 아니겠냐는 말이다. 오페라 하우스면, 정말로 의미 있는 곳이니 말이다. 어느 스피커를 막론하고, 지금은 디자이너의 컨셉과 마케팅이 중요하다고 본다. 기술력은 필시 따라 가야 할 기본 사항이나 그 외의 것들은 이끌어 가는 captain의 재량과 서포트 하는 crew들의 팀웍일 것이다.
물론, 클라이언트의 수준높은 깨인 사고가 더욱 중요하겠지.. 뒷돈이나 챙기려 들거나, 혹은 대충 대충, 이권 다툼이나 하려는 행태만 없다면.. 역시나 중요한 것은 서플라이어보다 커스터머의 마인드와 행보가 아닐까 싶다.

최근 현장에서 엔지니어들이 주최측 또는 출연팀이 준비한 CD를 플레이할 때 이따금 플레이가 되지 않는 경우를 겪죠,
그 대부분은 음악용 CD를 준비할 때 컴퓨터에서 'Audio CD'가 아니라 데이터로 웨이브 또는 MP3파일을 그대로 구워 오는 경우입니다.
예전과 다르게 최근 현장에서는 이렇듯 오디오 CD와 데이터 CD의 구분 자체가 모호해 지는 것을 느끼게 됩니다. 그 때문에 현장에서 사용하는 CD플레이어 역시 최근 발매되는 프로페셔널용 CD플레이어들은 상당수가 오디오 CD외에 MP3플레이어 등 CD-R, RW매체를 읽어 플레이하는 모드를 지원합니다.

일찌감치 프로페셔널 CD플레이어에서 MP3모드를 지원하던 Denon에서 이번엔 좀더 앞선 개념의 프로페셔널 CD플레이어를 내 놓았습니다. 'Slot-in Netowrk CD Player'라 불리는 DN-C640입니다.

1U 사이즈의 컴팩트한 디자인으로, 슬롯 타입의 로딩 메커니즘을 지니고 있는 C640은 외형상으로 보기엔 여느 프로용 CD플레이어와 다르지 않습니다. 하지만 실제 기능을 보면 사실 CD플이어라고 한정짓기에는 훨씬 다양한 Playback 기능을 지니고 있네요.
기본적인 CD의 Play외에, 데이터 CD로써 파일로 기록된 Wave파일과 MP2 및 MP3, 그리고 WMA(윈도우즈 미디어 오디오)파일을 읽고 플레이할 수있습니다. CD류는 CD-R, CD-RW외에 데이터용 DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW까지 지원합니다. 물론 오디오 파일의 플레이이죠. 하지만 정식 DVD 타이틀의 Audio Track이나 DVD-Audio디스크는 지원하지 않는 것 같습니다.
파일 포맷으로도 우리나라 사용자들이 많이 쓰는 OGG포맷이나 FLAC같은 비압축 포맷 역시 지원하지는 않네요. 하지만 파일 형식의 오디오 트랙의 플레이 만으로도 컴퓨터와의 연계 사용에 있어 무척이나 편리함을 줄 것 같습니다.

프로페셔널 제품 답게 트랜스포트의 기능들과 출력단은 무척 다양하게 구성되어 있습니다. 기본적인 Cue나 반복기능 외에 Pitch조정 기능등을 사용할 수 있습니다. 출력단 역시 RCA Unbalanced 출력 외에 XLR 오디오 출력과 AES/EBU, SPDIF 등의 디지털 출력을 모두 사용할 수 있습니다.

이러한 풍부한 기능들도 C640의 장점이지만 무엇보다 강력한 것은 바로 Ethernet을 통한 컴퓨터와의 연계 기능이라고 할 수 있습니다.
뒷 패널의 'LAN' 단자를 통해 컴퓨터과 직접 연결하거나 이더넷 스위치,허브와 같은 네트워크 장비를 통해 연결이 가능합니다.
마치 가정에서 흔히 사용하는 인터넷 공유기와 같이 웹페이지를 통한 설정 화면 및 콘트롤 화면을 제공해 이를 통해 C640의 플레이백 기능들을 콘트롤할 수 있습니다.

이더넷을 통한 C640의 네트워크 기능은 상당히 능동적이고 파워풀해서 단순한 콘트롤 기능 뿐 아니라 이더넷을 통해 공유 폴더에 있는 오디오 파일을 직접 플레이하거나 CD에 내장된 오디오 파일을 공유 폴더로 업로드하는 기능을 수행할 수 있습니다. 단품의 CD플레이어라기 보다는 네트웤에 연결된 오디오 재생도구와 같은 역할을 하는 것이죠.

 최근 점차 사용 폭이 넓어져 가는 통합 콘트롤 시스템 내에서 DN-C640은 단순 플레이 기능과 함께 네트웍에 일체화된 다양한 기능의 플레이 기능을 제공함으로써 보다 다양한 활용이 가능한 플레이어라 할 수 있을 듯 합니다.
