‘Butterflies’ at the service of the world’s major leaders and CEOs, from Tony Blair to Michael Dell

Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), January 24/27 2010 – Among the corporate events of considerable international importance, Outline informs that its loudspeaker systems were used to amplify the 2010 edition of the Global Competitiveness Forum, held at the Four Seasons Hotel, in the Kingdom Centre (winner of an award as the best skyscraper of the world for design).

Founded by the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) in 2006, the Global Competitiveness Forum, a meeting held annually, is regularly transmitted by TV broadcasters Al Jazeera, NBC and Bloomberg, as well as the world’s best-known news media.

Through the years, the GCF has attracted thousands of eminent political leaders, multinational company CEOs, ministers, government officials, intellectuals and academicians from every corner of the globe, with the sole aim of meeting and exchanging ideas.

The event’s mission is to increase awareness and enthusiasm on the challenges of competitiveness, critically assessing its aspects in relation to international trade, innovation, the environment (new forms of energy), development of human resources and sustainability; in short, at GCF 2010, talk focussed on the consequences that determine the fact of  “becoming competitive” on a global scale.

Among the most illustrious speakers, Tony Blair (UK Prime Minister from 1997 to 2007), Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Inc., Jeffrey R. Immelt, Chief Executive Officer of General Electric, John Chambers, Chairman and CEO of Cisco Systems, James Wolfensohn, 9th President of the World Bank Group, Robert Greifeld, Chief Executive Officer of the NASDAQ OMX Group, Alessandro Profumo, Chief Executive Officer of the UniCredit Group and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bank Austria, Paolo Pininfarina, Chairman of Pininfarina S.p.A., Enrico D’Onofrio, Corporate General Manager of MV Agusta, Daniel Esty, Hillhouse Professor of Environmental Law and Policy at Yale University, Delos M. Cosgrove M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Clinic, Stephen D. Pryor, CEO of ExxonMobil Chemical Company, Glenn Lowry, Director MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art, NY) and many other outstanding personalities.

Due to the event’s importance at international level, Events AVP, whose chairman is Mr. Sharif Tabbara – exclusive Outline distributor for Jordan – was selected, as it is a company with the necessary experience for supplying the sound reinforcement system and audio equipment necessary for the multiple applications required in situations of this type.

Moreover, in November 2009, Events AVP – again with Outline material – was called in for the sound reinforcement of another equally prestigious event, the World Economic Forum in Dubai.

As far as the audio at GFC 2010 was concerned, sound reinforcement in the conference hall (50 x 40 x 9 metres), involved the use of just 6+6 Butterfly Hi-Packs and 2+2 Subtech 218 SP. Control and power were courtesy of a YAMAHA M7CL console, XTA processor and Outline T series amplifiers.

As monitors, the illustrious speakers alternating on stage had at their disposal two compact Outline Micra II SP enclosures, whereas six units were used on front-fill duty to cover the first rows of seats.

The rooms allocated to interviews by Al Jazeera, NBC and Bloomberg were equipped with six more Micra II SP, whereas four Outline DVS 12 enclosures (in pairs) were used to reinforce the sound in other two halls (each seating sixty people), hosting the academicians and university professors.

Audio chief and FOH engineer, Carlo Gennaro, commented: “In this case, there was no need to work at 135 dB, but to cover the audience perfectly with a very ‘well-mannered’ SPL. There again, we had no alternative, considering the position of the microphones compared to the PA. But, as I’ve repeated for years, with a minimum of energy, the Butterfly gives a wonderful intelligibility – it almost seems to ‘breathe’, and it doesn’t matter at what distance. It goes exactly where I point it and you can feel the sound ‘in your face’. I give the merit for this to its waveguide, one of the few that works superbly…in fact, I’ll go as far as to put in writing a thought I have in common with several of my colleagues: on the world market, there are numerous line arrays, but on the ‘mid-high’ frequencies there are only two items able to give the same performance are this device …”

32 ‘Butterflies’ in concert in Vietnam’s largest stadium

Hanoi (Vietnam), 10th January 2010 – A Vertical Line Array Outline comprising 32 Butterfly CDH 483 Hi-Packs, supported by 16 SubTech 218, was chosen as the FOH system for “Happy New Year 2010, a concert for 35,000 people staged in the country’s largest stadium: My Dinh National Stadium.

Sponsored by the Maritime Bank and organized by Vietnam’s VTV3 TV (also on the Web), the show attracted a vast audience thanks to performances by the country’s best-known artists: My Tam, Lam Truong, Dam Vinh Hung and Hong Nhung. A wide range of music genres was reproduced: pop, dance, hip-hop and country.

Vietnam’s Outline distributor, Fantasies Show Light of Hanoi, was also the rental company that had the task of providing and installing the Butterfly rig at My Dinh National Stadium.

The event’s FOH engineer, Mr. Nguyen The Ngoc, commented: “Among the best-known high-end line arrays, I think the Butterfly is also one of the fastest and easiest to install; its prediction software is very accurate and provides further support. I always feel very secure with this object in my hands.”

Control and power were courtesy of a Midas XL3 console, XTA processor and Outline T7 amplifiers.

Bearing in mind the number of concerts that have been scheduled for some time for the present year, Fantasies Show Light has just purchased twelve of Outline’s new Mantas, with 120° dispersion, a VLA weighing just 24 kg (52.9 pounds) mechanically compatible with the Butterfly, for front-fill applications, and able to push out 147 dB (peak SPL, 4 modules). The order also includes four Subtech 218 and ten DVS 15 (1x15” - 1x3”) multi-purpose enclosures, as well as four T7 power amplifiers.

The Vietnamese company, from January 30th, will supply the Outlinearrays to reinforce the sound at “Rockstorm 2010“, the first of a series of nine mega-concerts for the year that has just begun.

The firm’s owner, Mr. Dinh Viet Hung, stated, “VTV3 needed to ensure all-round coverage of an audience of 35,000 people, but with a loudspeaker system that was compact, due to television broadcast requirements. Fortunately, the technology incorporated in the Butterfly also manages to satisfy these aspects too, as well as those involving FOH engineers; the result is everybody is always happy. We are waiting for them to consign us the new Mantas, which are very light weight and shall be used along with the Butterflies, specially in the concerts and the numerous average sized applications, for which we are called in increasingly frequently.”

Vendôme (France), October 2009 – The Minotaure complex just bought a new Outline sound reinforcement system, comprising twelve Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. speakers and two SubTech 218 SP subwoofers, controlled by an Outline Genius 26 unit.

Located in the centre of Vendôme, the ‘Le Minotaure’ complex has a total area of 1,500 square metres. It hosts a 769-seat theatre hall, a multi-purpose hall (holding 400 people seated and 600 standing), several smaller meeting rooms and a naturally illuminated foyer for exhibitions. ‘Le Minotaure’ was inaugurated in 2002, and has hosted numerous shows since – music, theatre, dance etc.

Nevertheless, the theater hall suffered from poor acoustics. The coverage was uneven, and the stereo image unbalanced. In 2009, it was decided to replace the front of house reinforcement system.

Several systems were compared – among them, a Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. vertical line array, lent by Outline’s French distributor Audio2 (www.outline.audio2.fr). This system passed listening tests and the theatre hall now hosts six elements per side, plus two SubTech 218 SP subwoofers and a Genius 26 controller.

The Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is a bi-amped speaker enclosure equipped with a Double Parabolic Reflective Wave Guide (D.P.R.W.G.). This enables to adjust the horizontal directivity angle between 60° and 150°, in 15° steps. It is equipped with two high frequency transducers (compression drivers with a 1.75-inch diaphragm) and four low-mid (5-inch diameter) transducers.

The SubTech 218 SP subwoofer is fitted with two 18-inch loudspeakers in separate chambers. The Genius 26 processor (2-input, 6-output) operates at 24-bit/96 kHz, and implements many types of filters, with slopes of up to 24 dB/octave, and eight EQs with 2 shelving and 6 parametric bands each, plus limiters on every output.

For Sébastien Bargue, who works for Scène de Nuit (the contractor that supplied and installed the system), “The Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.’ asymmetrical variable horizontal directivity was one of the key factors for the choice of the system. Being able to control the dispersion is very important in halls with poor acoustics or inadequate treatment. The product solves this problem and gives a true stereo image, which is pretty rare for this kind of system.”

The huge tree at New York’s Rockefeller Center switched on: the sound rig was Outline

New York, 2nd December 2009 – Butterfly and mini-COM.P.A.S.S., two of the Vertical Line Arrays manufactured by Brescia’s Outline, were used on the occasion of the lighting ceremony of the Christmas tree at the Rockefeller Center in New York, at the crossroads of 50th Street and Fifth Avenue.

America has celebrated Christmas round this tree – the most famous in the world and decorated with 20,000 coloured lights – since far-off 1931. Once again this year, there was a show that attracted thousands of people: this was also thanks to the spectacular ice rink, which, since it was opened in 1936, continues to draw people of all ages.

On stage to celebrate the event, amplified by the “Outlinearrays” – as well as other world-famous systems – stars such as Aretha Franklin, Shakira, Alicia Keys, Rod Stewart and even the Muppets, all performing great Christmas classics.

The show, transmitted live on NBC, was dedicated to US servicemen and women, who, along with the Big Apple’s mayor Michael Bloomberg, turned on the lights of tree, which will remain in front of the Rockefeller Center until January 7th 2010.

The company responsible for the audio was PRG (www.prg.com) – a famous American firm with branches worldwide that works at top level in the entertainment sector.

The work of fine tuning the Outline rig was entrusted to PRG sound engineer Matt Bell, who stated: “I chose the Butterfly system because we needed a line array that was compact in design and high powered. We hung all of the systems from Genie lifts, so we were limited to how much weight we had available. The Butterfly system allowed us to hang the correct amount of cabinets to cover the space. We were all very impressed with the coherence and intelligibility at 70 meters for such a small array. The frequency response was very flat and stable which allowed me good SPL levels without interfering with the broadcast mix. This added to the success of the event. My thanks go out to everyone at Outline for their help and support.”

Britannia Row’s Outlinearray supported the return of the one and only Robbie Williams at London’s Roundhouse

Outline’s Butterfly VLA was again requested by both the BBC and London's Roundhouse for the 2009 Electric Proms season. Supplied by Britannia Row, the system comprised 12 CDH 483 hi packs per side, supplemented by 3 Mantas “Wide boxes” each hang and 12 Subtech 218s, all driven by Outline’s T9 amplifiers and controlled via Dolby Lake 412s.

The Butterfly has become the most specified system for the Roundhouse due to its high power and even dispersion together with its camera-friendly look, which is essential to televised jobs from the Roundhouse.

October 20th the opening night of BBC's Electric Proms season saw the charismatic return of the one and only Robbie Williams who was backed by a 34-piece orchestra plus his own touring band. Legendary producer Trevor Horn was playing bass and directing the band.

Derrick Zeiba was in charge of the orchestra and Snake Newton was Robbie’s FOH engineer.

Derrick Zeiba remarked, "The addition of the Mantas wide element has meant that you no longer need infill/outfill boxes - the 120 degrees produced by Mantas does everything that you need. This was proven to great effect especially in the Roundhouse, which can be very unforgiving."

Snake Newton has been quoted as saying, "It's my favourite small system, very little system or channel EQ was used to get unbelievable results."

The Electric Proms continued its season with performances from Dizzee Rascal, Dame Shirley Bassey, The Doves and Smokey Robinson.

All performances used Outline’s Butterfly system with Mantas 120 degree cabinets and Subtech 218s.

Outline Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.

MSRP:
Shipdate: After Jan 1, 2008

The Outline Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is the only compact VLA on the world market offers the adjustment of directivity on the horizontal plane from 60 degrees to 150 degrees per side in relation to the axis, even asymmetrically.

Outline’s COM.P.A.S.S. - COMpact Polar Adjustable Sound System - is a loudspeaker element intended to form vertical line array but also able to be used as a stand-alone unit, like any other wide-range high performance enclosure. Its dispersion can be remote controlled as required via software, with wide variation on both planes, once the enclosure has been positioned alone or in multiples when used for sound reinforcement. In addition, a further adjustment system is included, which can also be remote controlled and enables to adjust the splay angle between elements when used as a vertical line array. Moreover, to facilitate dispersion adjustment to the utmost, by means of luminous beams, a laser system shows the aiming of the axes of each element’s HF section and highlights the limits of the horizontal coverage area.

Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. is a compact, ultra-light (50.7 pounds) self-powered element equipped with six loudspeakers: four high- efficiency 5-inch mid-woofers with twin neodymium magnetic circuit and two compression drivers with a 1.75-inch diaphragm, fitted with two D.P.R.W.G. waveguides (Outline patent). There are 16 possible combinations of horizontal coverage, including asymmetric ones, which can be exploited according to the audience and acoustic properties of the environment in which the sound has to be reinforced. The flying system’s mechanism offers the necessary precision for the foreseen adjustments with a resolution of just 0.5 degrees per step between the elements. In addition, the intelligent design of the mechanism itself facilitates the positioning of individual elements; mounting the VLA is a job that takes just a few minutes and does not require any physical strain.

A new chapter in professional sound reinforcement history has been opened, and the ambitious design combining “Mind, PC and Enclosure” in fact has became a reality, first with COM.P.A.S.S., and now, with Mini-COM.P.A.S.S.

OUTLINE PRESS BULLETINFlero (Brescia) Italy, Tuesday 13th October 2009

Outline appoints North American Sales Force

Company extends its coverage to the world’s most important market

Outline, which inaugurated its USA branch (Outline North America LLC) just a few months ago, has already expanded its frontiers. In fact, representation of the brand is complete throughout North America, including Canada.

A recent workshop was held – jointly organized by Outline’s Brescia HQ and the branch office in Farmingdale (NY) – and with a touch of pride, the network of US representatives officially took shape. States now covered are all except OH, Western PA, WVA.

Outline’s Giorgio Biffi chaired the workshop. After providing training for the sixty original products in the company’s catalog, he introduced a pre-release version of OpenArray, the avant-garde control and 3D simulation software, written by the Italian R&D team. This really conveyed to the American attendees the philosophy and key principles on which Outline has been based since 1973, the year of it was founded.

Biffi commented: “It was the first time we had officially presented our identity under the discerning eyes of some of the most respected professionals of the pro audio industry, whom we are now proud to call our representatives. As CEO of the company, my hope was to pass on the concept that is so well summed up in our long-standing motto: ‘The Sound of Big Ideas’. He added: “In the brief two days of the workshop, two days of was important to ‘anoint’ the participants, reminding them clearly of Outline’s mission, which, simply stated, is ‘to conceive, design and manufacture loudspeaker systems, electronics and ‘special’ acoustic components, with unmistakably distinctive features, characterized by high-level innovation and performance at the absolute top end of the professional Sound Reinforcement industry’. In fact, now more than ever before, I believe that the practical application of this motto has become a must.”

Thomas Bensen, industry veteran at the helm of Outline North America LCC as VP and Director of Operations, comments: “We expect great results from the American market, which is the most prestigious and important market in the world. We are truly excited by the commercial success of Butterfly, mini-COM.P.A.S.S. and MANTAS in particular in other world markets and felt the time was right to present Outline as its own brand and identity to North America. The response has been extremely positive with unprecedented results in a very short time. Looking forward, with new products and technologies on the near horizon, 2010 already has the makings of a record year.”

Professional loudspeaker manufacturer Outline has successfully launched its OPENARRAY 3D Software. Training seminars were held during Plasa 2009 on its stand, to train and show system engineers and sound designers the advantage of having a three dimensional software program that can predict the results expected from either a live performance or an installation of its products.

The intention of releasing an 'alpha' version is to gain the experience of system engineers consistently working in the field. Building on the success of V.I.P. (Vector Implementation Protocol), the idea is to have the engineers contact us with a “wish list” of additions to the software that would assist them in the future.

OPENARRAY has in its user files at present the three line array products from Outline, namely Butterfly, Mini-COM.P.A.S.S. and Mantas, by the end of this year all the subwoofer products will be available and early next year the full product portfolio, including all point source products.

OPENARRAY can also be used by sales designers to show clients what can be expected from their purchases. The technology behind OPENARRAY is based on a GL platform and features incredibly fast rendering time from input of data to final design. OPENARRAY also has the ability to import DXF files, thus giving engineers a head start to final deployment of the intended system.

The seminars at Plasa saw over a hundred system technicians from all over the world take advantage of the first look at OPENARRAY. The program went into its first event one week later at the GUINNESS 250 celebrations, where a 'Butterfly' system was used in HOP HOUSE 13 for performances by TOM JONES and KASABIAN.

Britannia Row system engineer Sergiy Zhtytnikov commented: "The program is really easy to use and accurately predicts the eventual performance of the Outline Butterfly. As a building platform for further enhancements that will appear soon and with the input from actual users the software has no competitors."

OUTLINE PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

Flero - Brescia - Italy, Monday, 7th September 2009

 Hi-res image:http://89.96.202.198/Outline_i-Mode/1.jpg

Outline introduces i-Mode, the intelligent loudspeaker platform

The Italian manufacturer introduces the next step in self-powered loudspeaker development, processing and control

At London’s upcoming PLASA show (booth 1-G10), Outline will introduce its newest technology, i-Mode. This unique and innovative platform will ultimately be implemented across a number of self-powered products, and represents a truly ‘intelligent’ platform dedicated to professional audio. i-Mode represents the next generation in the company’s vision for creative, innovative and practical technology – a vision established over a decade ago by founder Guido Noselli and continued today  by the research and development team.

Outline i-Mode platform is the company’s first truly ‘intelligent’ platform dedicated for use with professional audio systems. i-Mode has a lightweight and compact form factor that is entirely self-contained within the loudspeaker enclosure.

Outline i-Mode is perfectly integrated into the Outline product, accessible via the rear of the loudspeaker as well as remotely. As of September 2009, it is available in models DVS 115 SW, DVS 118 SW, and LAB 15, with plans to implement it across a number of self-powered Outline products.

Outline i-Mode is a truly ‘intelligent’ platform for advanced loudspeaker control. In addition to utilizing a powerful switching amplifier, the system provides complete and accurate loudspeaker control and reporting of all system parameters within each component, and across the entire system as a whole.

Using Outline i-Mode, loudspeaker performance can be completely optimized for a variety of applications. Acoustic output, for example, is maximized while maintaining the lowest possible distortion levels (an extensive list of its features can be found on page 4).

Through the use of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) and a built-in web server, users can control the sound system via any standard web browser (no special software required), just as one would navigate a website. Additionally, a number of control parameters can be conveniently accessed via the loudspeaker’s rear panel and display. With standard IP-based communication, the i-Mode platform is truly future-proof, controllable via netbook, smartphone, and any devices ‘of tomorrow’.

i-Mode operates on a Linux operating system with an Outline-customized kernel. Chosen for its extreme stability and compatibility, the operating system provides a robust foundation for i-Mode’s advanced functions. Audio conversion is done at 24-bit/192 kHz resolution.

As described by the Outline R&D team: "i-Mode is not just a simple amplifier module with embedded DSP, as is currently available on the market. Development in the fields of computers and electronics have allowed us to advance to the next step in Outline’s vision: 'from the PC to the loudspeakers'. This vision has guided us to the realization of this platform.”

i-Mode is designed, engineered and produced by the Outline s.r.l. team.

Outline will also be presenting this year a number of physical as well as software products.

Outline LAB 21 infra-sub will be shown for the first time at PLASA. The LAB 21 uses a hybrid waveguide and indirect radiation system. This design allows the single 21" driver to move two masses of air in one single chamber to give unprecedented results compared with its competitors.

Outline MANTAS: following in the footsteps of Butterfly's heritage, MANTAS has been developed either as a stand alone cost effective line array or as an addition to Butterfly. MANTAS, which has the same patented flying hardware as Butterfly, can be integrated into a Butterfly array to give 120 degree dispersion, thus providing infill/out fill duties. MANTAS as a stand alone system combined with Outline's new T5 amplifier system becomes an entry level line array product for small to medium size rental companies and is ideal for many installations.

Outline DVS series: all DVS series cabinets are now available as either passive or self powered versions; 8-10-12 and 15" models will be on display.

Outline OPENARRAY 3D software: has been designed in house by Outline. It can be used with all the Outline product range whether it be point source cabinets or line array. The distinct advantages of OPENARRAY is that DWG/EASE data can be imported directly into the platform and give the system engineer or designer a truly accurate prediction of what to be expected in LIVE conditions. Once the data has been implemented the render time is very quick. OPENARRAY is also the perfect selling tool, allowing Dealers and Distributors to show how a sound system can be employed to get perfect results every time. At PLASA Outline will be hosting training sessions three times per day; each session will accommodate 10 people.

Outline AUDIOCONTROL: a software platform that allows control of Outline’s T series amplifiers and also mini-COM.P.A.S.S. line array. Again this software has been designed in-house by Outline and will give the designer and system engineer control of all protocols associated with the products above mentioned. AUDIOCONTROL when used with mini-COM.P.A.S.S. gives the user a graphical interface between mini-COM.P.A.S.S. and all its functions-plus actual control of time alignment, phase and gain control. Training will also be offered on this product during PLASA as part of the of the ongoing training programs instituted from now and for the future.
